Our consumption of electricity is a massive contributor to our personal emissions. But here's the good news: there is a simple (and quick) way to offset your emissions in the home! Powershop explains how to do it.

The energy created by burning coal, oil and gas has a huge impact on greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), in the Earth’s atmosphere. And the more CO2 in the atmosphere, the higher global temperatures will rise. This accounts for many climate shifts around the world; from global sea level rises to extreme weather changes.

According to the Climate Council, the electricity sector is one of the biggest producers of CO2, accounting for over a third of Australia’s total emissions

But don’t get disheartened, together we can take action. By supporting energy companies that are doing the right thing for the environment and by making a few lifestyle changes, we can help make a difference.

Here’s where to start.

Consider switching your energy to Powershop Australia

Powershop Australia (Powershop) started in 2014 and is backed by Meridian Energy, Australasia’s largest 100% renewable energy generator. Powershop is Australia’s greenest power company, three years running, as ranked by the Greenpeace Green Electricity Guide.

Powershop’s vision is to turn the Australian energy industry on its head - putting customers and the environment first. They have over 140,000 customers across Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and South East Queensland and want to create a better energy future that Australians need and deserve. It’s what guides everything they do, especially being the first and only power company in Australia that is accredited 100% carbon neutral!

Powered by renewable energy

Meridian Energy is Australasia’s largest 100% renewable energy generator. They only own renewable generation assets (such as wind farms or hydro stations) and are firmly invested in developing even more renewable generation assets to contribute to a greener energy future and to help pass savings back to Powershop’s customers.

Their aim is to always put more renewable energy into the grid than their customers actually use. As more people join Powershop, the more they can further invest in renewables to match their growing customer base. So, with their customers, they’re a team working together to help protect the environment.

Renewable energy and the home

No matter which energy retailer you buy your electricity from, it all comes from the same central pool called the National Electricity Market (NEM). The energy grid is made up of energy from a variety of sources, including renewable generation (solar, wind, hydro) and coal-fired power.

Although Powershop only supplies energy generated from renewable sources to the NEM, it can’t control what’s actually delivered to its customers’ homes or businesses.  So, Powershop made the decision to carbon offset its customers’ energy usage to help its customers reduce their carbon footprint.

So what is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a process that involves a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide (or other greenhouse gases) in order to compensate for or to offset, an emission already made elsewhere. At Powershop, the carbon offsetting process involves the purchase of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) and Certified Emission Reduction (CER) certificates. These are not physical certificates but are a digital currency traded on the market – much like money.

They select a mixture of both local, national and international credits, including Forests Alive’s Verified Emission Reduction Credits (an Australian based forestry project).

How can I play a part?

By joining Powershop, not only are you committing to support renewable energy generation, but your energy usage is carbon offsetc - meaning you’re helping to reduce climate change.

Joining Powershop takes less than 5 mins and you can sign up online. The best part – they break up with your old retailer for you, saving you the awkward conversation.
