Pursuing science-led climate policy

We’re calling for science-based and Paris Aligned climate policy in Australia, because delaying action means bigger costs later. As ethical investors, we aim to use our influence to drive a fair and ambitious transition, one that seeks to safeguard people, nature, and our members’ financial futures, in line with our commitment to a thriving planet.

Calling for science-based policy

Australia’s climate future will be shaped by the choices we make today. Acting early with a clear, ambitious plan can help reduce future risks – for people, nature, and the economy, and help set us up to benefit from future green industries.

Here’s how we’re contributing:

Push politicians for ambitious Paris-aligned climate policy – direct & through submissions, at the State and Federal level

Use our position as an investor to influence businesses to make policy asks consistent with their public commitments, and support Paris Aligned climate policy

Amplify our advocacy through media and member engagement

62–70% below 2005 levels

Australia’s 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution to emissions reduction, set in September 2025.

Action we've taken
  • Our CEO wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister calling for an 85% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target – Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) - by 2035.
  • Recognising the importance of different voices publicly endorsing strong climate policy, we chaired a positive lobbying working group through the Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) and CA100+. Through this group we explored ways to create public support for an ambitious 2035 target, resulting in an Op-Ed in the Australian Financial Review.
  • Our Chair and our Deputy Chief Investment Officer each joined respective investor roadshows to Canberra leading up to the NDC to encourage an ambitious target with key decision makers across the Parliament.
  • We helped lifted the ambition of investor group submissions on key pieces of climate policy including the 2035 NDC, the Future Gas Strategy, and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act Reforms.
  • We met with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources to discuss the Future Gas Strategy, Australia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and emission reduction goals.

We cannot take credit for all this work. We work with Australian and overseas investors, civil society organisations including Market Forces and the Australian Centre for Corporate Responsibility. All the wins we have had to date are attributable to pressure that has been applied from every direction.
